There have been some fantastic poker movies released over the years. From blockbusters to independents, if you are a poker and a film fan watching these movies is a simple choice. Here, we will explore more about some of the most well liked poker movies.
Poker Movies #1 – Rounders
Quite possibly one of the most famous poker movies of all time, this movie paired Matt Damon with Edward Norton and John Malkovich. While originally only raking in $20 million at the box office, the film has become somewhat of a cult hit since.
The film focuses on Mike McDermott (Damon) in his battle to make enough money to help pay off loan sharks that are after Lester Murphy (Norton). With just five days to make $15,000, McDermott and Murphy franticly play low limit cash games to pay off the debt, but they are caught cheating and lose the entire bankroll. With just a day left to pay off the debt, Murphy flees but McDermott takes a $10,000 loan and goes straight where the debt is owed Teddy “KGB” to play him to pay off the debt.
Poker movies #3 – Maverick
Set in the old west, the film follows Bret Maverick (Gibson) as he goes to play in the biggest five card draw tournament in the world with a $25,000 entry fee. As Maverick is $3,000 short, he goes to collect money that he is owed in Crystal River where he runs into Mrs Annabelle Bransford (Foster) and his rival Marshal Zane Cooper (Garner). The story then follows Maverick on his way to play the tournament.
There are several other notable poker movies as well, including; Casino Royale, The Cincinnati Kid and Shade all of which are worth a watch if you are a poker fan.
